Personal Support for Part-time Students: St. Edward’s University - John and Lisa on Affirmative Action at Universities

Personal Support for Part-time Students: St. Edward’s University

at St. Edwards we really understand
the thought that goes into the process
of deciding to go back to college for a
bachelor's or master's degree
and particularly the unique challenges
faced by working adults
there is an individual that you'll be
working with at every step of the
process starting with the admission
process you have an admission counselor
like myself that
works with you kind of step by step
after you're admitted you have an academic
advisor that works with you throughout
the entirety of your program and if you
go to financial aid route you also have
a personal financial services counselor
that works with you throughout your
program so yes the overall point is that

we we take a very personal approach when
I first visit with a prospective student
I will sit down and talk to you about
what your goals are both personally and
professionally and why you're thinking
about coming back to school
and then construct a path for you that
makes sense based on what you're wanting
to do
from there I help you through the
application process itself in terms of
gathering the required materials that we
need
to have a complete application and
then I will stay in touch with you
throughout the application review
process
and answer any questions you may have
while they're making an admission
decision
as your academic advisor here at St. Eds I would
have a role with you before you come
while you're here and then after
graduation even in getting you to campus
and and figuring out if this is the
right place for you
once you're here connecting you with with
supports on campus
through a sort of referral problem-solving
concierge function and and connecting
with people who can provide you with
resources
here that you may not even realize
are available to you
we are here in person people work because they love this environment
people teacher because
they love connecting with students and I
would say that is the biggest piece
of the St. Edward's kind of magic
what I hear from students
regarding the personal support that they
receive here at St. Edward's is that
early in the process it can be the
difference in motivating them to take
the next step
and actually come back to school and
then once they're in their program the
ongoing
resources and personal support that they
get plays a direct role in the
successful completion of their degree

John and Lisa on Affirmative Action at Universities

i think that some sort of affirmative
action
is necessary
uh... i in general would be more
comfortable with it being based on
economic grounds in the reason for that
is that
if you come from a poor area the schools
are not people anybody tells you that
they are has never gone to what if they
don't know what it's like to share a
book between three students are not give
the bring the books home
because they're afraid that the lose the
remaining two copies if they have
or did not have internet access or
encyclopedias if anybody's so users that
sort of thing it is different so i think
that some server from election
is necessary and less comfortable
because i'm i know you know i don't know
i am
and something
or whether it's increased funding to
urban areas that have
racial minorities in them something like
that i'm in favor of that justified and
all that make it so that that i fear
saying that you're okay way
giving more money to resemblance
with poor economic status because they
have bad school then you run the risk of
your doctor you are right letting
somebody and cool
if they did have
or access to education is probably
actually less qualified than some of the
other applicants and so i think that you
really run the risk their abutting
someone in first of all i just think
unfair that someone less qualified is
getting in
names back in a bar the fact that just
for their own
you know good
they could be getting into a programmer
university over their head
salamander
every why do you see what you're saying
i think maybe you know you talked about
pumping money into i'm you know
typically african-american or hispanic

areas maybe instead of
pumping money instead
are racially mane or and minority areas
pump that money into atm areas and
poverty and stuff like that i think it's
also interesting to note
our generation often called the
millennial ateneo oppose affirmative
action that in order to make up for past
discrimination but twenty percent do
agree with that for the purpose of
increasing diversity which to me
i think it
you know i think to be involving both
are important i think cued reason that i
am affirmative action not implemented in
the first place
you really want to make up for for past
discrimination leakey talked about these
areas
that art big just don't have it as well
as from and as other areas of the
country
uh... but i also do you think it's
important how diversity on campus and
that in the university of texas
defense here
yeah exactly is that they say you know
first of all up
we would not let abigail fisher and no
matter what no matter what race she was
she just wasn't enough to get and
although her dad and i believe her
sister both when that's that's
interesting uh... that have been let me
also generation there's a lot of
campaigning a lot of things are more
likely if your family markets and and
and you know he prolly let loose must
have been really unqualified behind that
are going to take a day
uh... and that expense its
do we need in the reserve the right
diversify our campus at n_b_c_
excellently deliver mike tyson
so to respond to the initial point that
you made about the
letting people in or not qualified
their again not not detected just had to
lay out what i think a proponent of this
would say is that
we don't simply use g_p_a_ s_a_t_s and
things like that
um... there are other things that are
considered so at some point
old are being lesbian who were not as
qualified in numeric service because of
clubs that they were in community
service that they've done things like
that
and is deciding that someone should be
let me even though they have slightly
worse test scores because the were
lifeguarding because they did habitat
for humanity is that any better reason
to let somebody was less qualified in
the racial
diversity i mean they're they're trying
to bring in different types of people
and somebody comes from a racial
minority or from a different economic
class
might have advantages psychologically
year culturally or something like that
they would benefit the school managed
care
any benefit point which
and also that
the the entire system could be seen as
unfair because what qualifies you know
is in a number it's all these different
characteristics and especially with the
insound
ivy league school majorly prestigious
schools like stanford and harvard i
think it's ninety percent of
valedictorians that apply to those
universities get rejected so it's really
not be suffering is being basically have
to have the church answer to get let
into the school also i'm not to be
involved in certain clubs like you know
act if you don't know anything really
well-rounded and they're looking for
signs of some sort of
interesting experience that nobody else
has that nobody else can bring to the
table that they can bring to the
university so i mean you're really the
whole of the system as a whole could be
seen as unfair
it'll be interesting to see what the
supreme court has to say in regards to
